Town of Cochrane Web Nightmare

I will video about this soon, but in the mean time... After botching a deal to add video to its website, the Town of Cochrane has now decided to spend nearly $60,000 on a redevelopment of the site. Is that number correct? $59,950! for a new website, even with staff that is unreal. Only Government could justify that!! Read Rachel Maclean's article on the issue.

The Town of Cochrane was told May 25 it has a dysfunctional website.
According to research by Briden Solutions, after interviewing town staff, 160 citizens, holding two focus groups and 20 usability tests, it seems Cochrane has failed in providing a user-friendly website.
“Our website had outgrown its functionality,” Maureen Noble, manager of information services told council.
It seems the average time to locate information on the site is four minutes, which Briden employee Kristen Bullock called “horrible.”
The town has decided to do something about it, and will spend $59,950 to revamp www.cochrane.ca.
The funding for the new project will be coming from a website enhancement reserve fund and a provincial grant.
The new site will include a better search engine, business directory, community calender, more online applications, interactive town and pathway maps, and will be easier to navigate.
One problem raised by council was the timeline of 13 months.
“My concern is . . . by the time we review this and update the website our design will be out of date,” said Coun. Tara McFadden.
Laurie Drukier, the town’s communication co-ordinator, said the town is looking to hire a part-time communication position to look after website updates.
