Fire Safety Tip

I see a lot of things when showing houses, but all too often I see some dangerous things from a fire safety perspective. I saw a great example of that today.

Hey there! Rob Reynar here just checking in. On a home inspection today and I thought this would a great opportunity to point out something that I see a lot in home inspections and that home inspectors don't like to see and I don't like to see and I know the Fire Chief wouldn't like to see. We're in a home inspection here in the basement, of course part of that is checking out the electrical panel and checking out the furnace hot water tank to make sure that everything is functioning properly. In this case everything is functioning fantastic, everything is done properly but there's one issue here. You'll notice that there's a stove down here, it's not just sitting here, they've actually added 220 and it's plugged in. So that stove is loose plugged in here, no venting. Also, they're moving that "we need cardboard boxes to move" but that's not a good place to pile them. Look at that, right in front of the electrical panel and then here's the furnace hot water tank and there looks to be some sort of jackets and sleeping bags strewed about next to the furnace. I actually pulled them back because they were all the way down there and you can see there's some loose installation back there as well. That's all fire hazard. you do not want anything stored next to the furnace nor the hot water tank. You've got combustion air, you need room for that. You also have piled lights and you also don't need any problems there. Again just some simple safety stuff and I see an awful lot maybe go down and check your basement make sure you are not making some of these simple mistakes that could become very costly in the future.
