Green Rating Homes

The Calgary Real Estate Board is talking about implementing a "green rating" system for homes listed on the MLS. This is a BAD idea! Realtors should not be in the business of "rating" homes in any way!

Green Rating Homes Blog Transcription

Hey there! Rob Reynar here, just checking in. Wanna talk about a proposal by the Calgary Real estate Board which I think will lead us down a very dangerous path. They are talking in 2010 of having a green rating on homes, on the MLS system. Now i know it's just a proposal, I know they're just talking about it. But I think even fundamentally, going down the road of rating homes based on their green rating, I think is very dangerous. If you've got an older home and you've put new installation in the roof and new windows on it, now will it stack up versus a brand new home coming out of the ground from a builder? No way, no older home no matter how you retro fit it, is gonna match the new technology of building. I don't think we should be pitting one house versus another based on how environmentally conscious the house is. Everybody lives their lives a different way, people use more power, people use more heat, people use more or less water. They recycle or they don't recycle, that should be up to the individual. I don't think the real estate community should be in the habit of telling the consumer, this house is better than this house because it's more efficient. I think the consumer should make that decision on their own. I would say a big thumbs down to green rating of houses on the Calgary MLS System.
